Local economic observers describe Kavala's economy as resting on three main pillars: tourism built around its Byzantine castle, ancient aqueduct and coastline; maritime trade through its commercial and passenger ports; and agriculture, with olives, tobacco and grapes grown across the surrounding plains and hills.
