Local opinion pieces have renewed calls for Kavala's historic lighthouse, perched on the Panagia peninsula overlooking the bay, to be restored and once again lit as a working landmark rather than serving purely as a photogenic backdrop. Advocates argue the lighthouse, one of the most recognisable features of the Old Town skyline alongside the castle and the aqueduct, is under-promoted relative to its potential draw for visitors walking the peninsula's heritage trail. Any restoration would need to be coordinated with the Hellenic Navy's Lighthouse Service, which maintains the country's aids to navigation.
