The Kavala Water and Sewage Company's recent collection campaign has so far failed to encourage residents to resolve their outstanding debts. According to company officials, approximately 3.5 million euros in unpaid water charges remain on the books. Once new enforcement procedures take effect, the utility plans to refer delinquent accounts to tax authorities with a 50 percent surcharge and will place a hold on debtors' tax identification numbers. Meanwhile, the company has noted a seasonal uptick in water demand during summer months, with consumption increasing by 4 to 5 percent during the warmer season.
