Kavala-born point guard Giorgos Makaratzis is preparing with Greece's men's U18 national team ahead of the EuroBasket U18 tournament, running in Serbia from 26 July to 3 August 2026. Separately, Apostolia Zormbala, who currently plays for PAOK after coming through Asteras Kavalas, has made the final squad for Greece's women's U18 team for their own EuroBasket U18 campaign. Local basketball clubs say having two players with Kavala roots on national youth squads in the same summer is a strong sign for the pipeline of talent coming through the area's academies.
