The Panagia peninsula, Kavala's original settlement, continues to draw visitors on foot through its narrow lanes past Byzantine-era walls, the hilltop castle and the old lighthouse overlooking the bay. Guides recommend timing the walk for late afternoon, when the light softens over the harbour and the peninsula's cafes and tavernas fill up. The route is typically combined with a visit to the nearby aqueduct, the Kamares, which still spans one of the roads into the modern town centre.
