Of the roughly 262 tobacco warehouses that once stood in Kavala at the industry's early 20th-century peak, around 54 survive today, many converted into cultural venues, hotels, shops or museums. Visitors can walk between former warehouses along Damianou, Ethnarchi Makariou and Nikis streets, once the heart of the trade run by merchant families and companies including the Herzog firm. The self-guided route pairs naturally with a stop at the Tobacco Museum for context on the industry that briefly made Kavala a cosmopolitan hub trading with Vienna, Paris and beyond.
